fondazione march for contemporary art presents a cycle of lectures entitled “What is Contemporary? Artists and curators tell”: a series of meetings on contemporary art, directed to the Humanities and Philosophy School students of the University of Padova and to the public.

The aim of fondazione march is to present a series of meetings to promote the knowledge sharing and to stimulate the audience to compare contemporary themes and tendences, through focusing on several aspects others than common university lessons. Conference relators will be international curators and well-known mid-career artists, to answer the question “What is contemporary?” through a presentation of their researches and practices.

The collaboration with the University of Padova is clearly one of the main proposals of the Fondazione, in line with the mission: to promote and encourage an open debate on contemporary art, through a direct exchange between experts and the public, enabling them to get in touch with artistic realities of international level.

Which direction is the artistic research of young videomakers pursuing?

Où va la vidéo?

In the eighties, Cahiers du cinéma series first raised this question, to investigate and create the history of this new expanding media, which was revolutionizing the visual imaginary and the way people approached reality.

The new “cheap and easy to manage” video recording media opened the doors to a new way of seeing things and analising the visual.

Today, after nearly half a century of experimentation and institutionalisation, the same media seems to be well consolidated and integral part of the common vision.

Which are the new forms of experimentation connected to this medium, permanent part of  every-day life?

We don’t want to raise this question through looking back to the history of video, but we want to start from the video-researches of those artists who nowadays are setting up a personal way to see (and make people see) reality.

Où va la vidéo is an open call to young artists, with no limits of age and nationality, who intend their work as a research for a new way of relating with the video medium.

The initiative will be presented during the SSF08 - Summer Student Festival 2008 (May 31st – June 6th), organized by ASU in the city of Padua.

An (ebook) catalogue  will be realised after the event, with essays and interventions on the competition. Artists will be asked to send images, technical information and details useful to the comprehension of the works.

A further event will be organised to present the whole project.
